The 3rd annual Faith and Science week is this week at Trinity Western University! A great lineup of professors discussing how their faith aligns with their scientific study and the integration of a Christian worldview and science. The lineup for the week includes:

March 19, 6-7pm: Dr. Dennis Venema - Biology

March 20, 6:30-7:30pm: Dr. Arnold Sikkema - Physics

March 21, 6:30-7:30pm: Dr. Chadron Friesen - Chemistry

March 22, 6-7pm: Alumni pannel

Come join us each night in Neufeld room 41 on Trinity Western's Langley Campus. Refreshments will be provided each night along with a question and answer period after each lecture. Hope to see you there!

The 2nd Annual Trinity Western Blood Drive was hosted on March 8th, 2012. We had a large turnout and again had to turn potential donors down. Here are the results of the clinic:

Donors attended: 107
Deferrals: 27 (this was high due to travel deferrals/faints /only 2 low irons)
Target: 73
Collected: 79 units/donations - 108%

We once again exceeded our goal and have the potential to save many lives. Thanks to Canadian Blood Services for coming out and doing the collection and Sodexo for sponsoring the event. Next year's clinic dates to come.

Faith and Science WEEK!!

Once again the TWU Biology Club is hosting the "Faith and Science Week" on the Langley Campus. Every night from Monday to Thursday at 7pm there will be guest speakers presenting current issues that face our society today and a Christian response to them. All sessions will be held in RNT 125 at 7:00pm.

Monday:

Dr. Bob Doede will be presenting on Transhumanism

Tuesday:

Dr. Dennis Venema will be presenting on the chimp/human debate and the theory of common ancestry

Wednesday:

Dr. Anthony Siame will be presenting on GMO's (Genetically Modified Organisms) and their impact on todays food resources and economy.

Thursday:

Dr. Christopher Morrissey will be speaking on the right to food and water as applied to the bottled water debate

After every session there will be a question and answer period with the presenter. After the seminar on thursday there Dr. Morrissey will be joined with Dr. Siame for an extended question period on all the topics presented during the week.

Free food and beverages will be provided during each session.

Once again the sessions will be at 7 pm in room RNT 125.

Kickoff Event and Pre-Med Seminar Date

The Fall Kickoff is scheduled for:

Friday, October 1st

3-4 PM on the Neufeld Lawn

Ice cream will be provided with a variety of toppings as well as a RAFFLE PRIZE to be given away to a student. There is no cost and calendars will be available with the biology club events listed on them.

The Pre-Med Seminar is scheduled for:

Thursday, October 7th

3 PM, room TBA

Come out to hear from students who are currently enrolled in med-school or recently graduated as well as doctors to find out how to get an upper hand on your application process. Questions are welcome.

Breast cancer seminar

This Thursday at 9:30am in Neufeld 37, there is a seminar with Dr. Urve Kuusk.
She is an oncology surgeon for Providence Heath and Vancouver Coastal Health, and associate professor of surgery at UBC. She will be speaking and answering questions concerning 'benign and malignant diseases of the breast'. If you want to know more about the disease, have concerns with treatments, or are just curious about cancer development this is the place to become educated without taking the Neoplasia course at TWU.

This event is open to all who are interested and there will be refreshments provided.

Paul Brown- As a chemist, information systems present in our human bodies point towards an intelligent agent. a.k.a. Intelligent Design

David Clements- As an ecologist, present day natural selection can be seen through the evolution of weed species tolerating global warming.

Arnold Sikkema- As a physicist, studies of moder astronomy and the big bang theory bring new interpretation to biblical references.

Dennis Venema- As a biologist, new fields of comparative genomics has supported the hypothesis that humans share ancestry with other forms of life.

How to be a Christian Environmentalist without leaving home
The Christian environmentalist movement has come a long way since the 1970s when it emerged alongside pagan hippies advocating for a greener world. In fact, with the present realization of the deep theological roots of creation stewardship, there is no movement to join. Followers of Christ are environmentalists, whether they realise it or not. In this talk I will introduce your creation care calling by introducing you to Christians who have lead the way and mentored me in the process. I will feature a fellowship of Loren Wilkinson, Cal De Witt, Peter Harris, Sir Ghillian Prance, John Wood, Steven Bouma-Prediger, Markku Kostamo, Matthew Sleeth and Ben Lowe. Each has left an enduring mark on the Christian community and creation itself.

Genesis from a historical perspective

God revealed His story of how he interacts with us humans, to a culture that He regarded as worthy of receiving it and capable of fully understanding it.
We who are alive today, need to be humble and recognize that those ancient Middle-Eastern people were able to see things in ways that we westerners are unable to because we are blind.

To illustrate this I want to draw attention to the pictorial art of ancient people and what they understood by the building blocks of the cosmos, and how their symbolic universe presupposed a depth of understanding that goes far beyond the purely descriptive.

I want to give the audience some resources in order to understand how the ancient mind and imagination worked, so that the Genesis narratives and the poetry of the Psalms, which we may call neither myth nor history, can function as they were intended to, also in our intellectual sphere

Modern astronomy can deepen our appreciation of both the creation and the Creator. What can we learn about the history and origin of the universe, and of ourselves, by the study of stars and galaxies? And how do evangelical, Bible-believing Christians respond to what we hear from the astrophysicists and cosmologists?
